Government confirms the revised Eastern route for HS2 with a spur to Sheffield Midland Mainline station and commits to a junction on the Eastern leg to allow for a Northern loop from Sheffield to Leeds

Sheffield City Region has committed to working together following the Secretary of State’s announcement which provides certainty over the High Speed Two route in Sheffield. This announcement means that local authority and business leaders can start long-term planning to maximise the benefits of HS2 and mitigate the negative impacts on communities.

Business and local authority leaders in Sheffield City Region have always fully supported HS2 and it is a key part of their plans to make the region a competitive centre of business excellence. However, local authority leaders have held differing views on their preferred route due to the impact it will have on local communities in Doncaster and Rotherham. They will continue to work together with Government and with these communities to mitigate these impacts.

Sir Nigel Knowles, Chair of the Sheffield City Region LEP, said: “The Government’s HS2 route decision will give confidence to local businesses and an economic boost to the region’s economy. HS2 will bring transformational change to our region as we work together to build a thriving, super-connected and successful economy. To realise its true potential, HS2 must be fully integrated with wider plans for Northern Powerhouse Rail which will bring fast, frequent connections to from Sheffield to Leeds, Manchester and the North.”
